The “F” Stands for Football

With college football season over and the NFL season quickly coming to a close, we football fans are left with the memories of the past year. Of course we have plenty to talk about and the talk of next season always starts immediately, yet it’s still such a long way until that first college game of 2010. However something has got me thinking, a question that I have been asking myself for some time. Am I the only one who is fed up with he NFL?

I think it’s time we take a look into the mind of a disgruntled football fan.

Media, Merchandise and Money

Due to baseball’s complete snooze fest and the joke that the game has become, football should have no problem being crowned “America’s greatest past time”. The way the NFL explodes throughout the year with new shows, merchandise, or somebody shooting their own foot, it’s very hard to keep the NFL  out of your mind. The way the  cash comes in almost as if they have a forest of trees sprouting thousand dollar bills is pretty amazing. I can’t speak for all of you but the way the draft is covered is more interesting than any election I have ever seen. Not to mention the stadiums; more like small cities trying to match the over-inflated egos of most owners. Don’t get me wrong, I get it. So as I sit with my $10.00 beer and $6.00 hot dog in my seat that I paid too much for, I ask myself a question…Why am I here?

Most fans would say “to support the team”, “to cheer or boo for the other guy”, “for the experience  of a live NFL game”, or maybe they just want something to do to impress that new girl they just picked up. However, I think for most the answer is simple – It’s the love of the game. I mean, after all that’s the reason we are here in the first place. You can’t love the players if you don’t love the game.

It IS Impressive

I mean let’s think about the game for a minute. The sight of that missile cutting through the air looking for it’s target, is breathtaking.  Or the way a player can crash through a line unleashing the  monster inside. What about when a coach pulls a play out of his hat that keeps his team alive for one more down.  Some just live for the defense as they make a goal line stand showing how they are an unstoppable army. Those are the things that make the game what it is, those and so many more.

So then why is it that this year and last I have grown tired and flat out bored with the NFL? I assure you it has nothing to do with the fact that my Chicago Bears are a mess. And trust me when  I say it has nothing to do with the fact that I am from Detroit and the Lions are still a joke. For the record, I always thought the Lions were a joke. I also like the Steelers and the way they came alive towards the end of the season should at least put a smile on my face but, it didn’t.  I should be happy with the Saints and what that team has done but I can’t seem to care.  The problem is that the hype for the NFL is nothing more than that, just hype.
