Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour said last week that he will take part in the throwing drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. However, he won’t throw a ball to any participating combine receivers, saying he will instead wait to throw to his own college receivers at CMU’s Pro Day on March 24th.
“I’m throwing, I’m doing all the movement and all the stationary targets,” said LeFevour. “With the receivers, it’s getting into a rhythm and throwing to guys that I’m used to. I’m doing it so I can put the best product out there on Pro Day.” LeFevour acknowledged that some NFL teams might look at his refusal to throw to combine receivers as a negative.
“Sure , but I was the first one to commit to the Senior Bowl as a quarterback, so I’m not afraid to compete,” he continued. “I’m obviously not shying away from anything. I’m not hiding anything. I just want to put the best product out there and do the best that I can on Pro Day.”
LeFevour is part of a large group of quarterbacks, most of them more highly valued and who have also chosen not to take part in some or all of the quarterback drills at the NFL’s annual scouting camp. LeFevour also mentioned he’s been working to improve his fundamentals by working with former NFL quarterback Zeke Bratkowski.
“Just fine-tuning mechanics here and there, from lead-foot placement to the more compact release and better follow-through, and little things like that,” LeFevour said. “You can’t really re-invent the wheel at this point. You can only change some little, minor things.”
LeFevour is projected anywhere from a sixth or seventh-round pick to an undrafted free agent in the draft this April. At this point, we can only speculate how this will affect his draft status.
